Mark Hunter, who won gold at the Bejing Olympics in the lightweight double sculls with his partner, Zac Purchase, recently visited Hornchurch Leisure Centre to reinforce the message that activity is fundamental for everyone.
Mark, who used to train regularly at the centre, came back to visit only days after returning from his victorious trip to Bejing. Chris Spencer, manager at Hornchurch Leisure Centre, is full of praise for all the work that Mark does with the local community. “He is a great role model for the children in the area and does a lot of work to encourage people to be more active and get involved with a sport they enjoy. We are delighted that he took the time to come and show us his gold medal.”
Hornchurch Leisure Centre has reported a marked increase in the number of people using the rowing machine’s since Mark and Zac’s success. “It’s amazing what rubs off on members particularly when the person who won is from the area,” comments Spencer.
